NO SHOTS FIRED

The Second Anglo-Boer War started in Pretoria when the Transvaal Republican Government handed an ultimatum to the British Resident, Mr Conynham-Green on the 9th October 1899, war was declared and started on the 11th October 1899 without a shot being fired.

Johannesburg fell to the British on May 1 1900 and on the 4 1h May British troops were engaged in skirmishes with commandos at Six Mile Spruit, Zwartkop and Irene on our southern borders. Lord Roberts demanded the unconditional surrender of the Capital and General Louis Botha withdrew his burghers without firing a shot and took up new positions on the Donkerhoek mountain range east of Pretoria.
