PIONEER SKETCHES

Tom's interest in things historical started early in life, and became an all consuming passion, with his main interest being the origin of place names. To Tom, a name is not just a means of identifying a place, but a way of coming to grips with history and with the romance of the past.

Tom Andres, also affectionately known as Mr Pretoria, spent over 30 years researching and surveying the Church Street cemetery. He was further instrumental in ensuring that the graves were restored. He held numerous historical tours over the years, imparting his knowledge to others. The third entrance gate to this cemetery namely Pioneers Gate was named by him.

This booklet by Tom Andrews was te first ever printed about the pioneers buried in the Church Street Cemetery.
